Subject: TAB: The Grip Of Love by Tom Verlaine

More Tom Verlaine. Hope ya’ll like it now. A small request – anyone got
the solo to Breakin’ In My Heart, or the tab to Cry Mercy Judge? Both
really tricky I know, but I’d love to be able to do them.

‘The Grip of Love’ by Tom Verlaine, from his eponymous first solo
album.

Virtually the whole song is based around the main riff (the intro
differs slightly in the rhythm guitar bit), which is backed by the
rhythm guitar & bass clonking once a bar with a big A chord.
The chorus is based around a G D G E progression; I just use the open
chords for rhythm or a power chord for lead.
There are several mistakes in the solo – I just can’t get the wailing
two-note chords Tom uses, but I’ve done my best. Any corrections etc
gratefully received.

I’ve copied the lyrics verbatim from the sleeve notes of my Japanese
import cd; this is mainly for amusement rather than correctness. They
appear to have been translated into Japanese (yes, you get a Japanese
lyric sheet too) and then back into English. A few things seem to have
been lost in the translation (like some rather odd phrases, and any
sort of ‘repeat to fade’ type instructions). My favorite is that the
last song on the album is called “Breakin’ my heart”…

Do the 2 intro bars
Do the 2 main riff bars

(Verse 1) Do the 1 main riff bar for each line:
You do the moon
You do the snake
Everywhere you go
You make the prime mistake
You take a picture
And lay it in my toll
Some time I’ll win babe
Just like the Milky Way

(Chorus 1)
[G]I don’t un[G]derstand
[D]Must be th[D]e grip of love
[G]Sure had i[G]t in your hand
[E]Must be th[E]e grip of love

(Verse 2) Do the 1 main riff bar for each line:
We did so many things
To find out how we felt
Now you say I’m yours
Well don’t that buckle my belt (Yes! But what does it mean?)

(Chorus 2)
[G]I don’t un[G]derstand
[D]Must be th[D]e grip of love
[G]Sure had i[G]t in your hand
[E]Must be th[E]e grip of love
[E]Must be th[E]e grip of love

Solo Yeaah!
Go Tom Go (ahem)

(Chorus 3) Comes in towards the end of the solo.
Don’t you know sometimes
I don’t understand
Must be the grip of love
You got me in your hands
Must be the grip of love
You got the grip of love

(Fade out bit)
Must be the grip of love (Time for a ‘repeat ad infinitum’ I think)
Must be the grip of love
Must be the grip of love
Sure got it in your hand
Must be the grip of love
Sure got it in your hand
Must be the grip of love
Sure got it in your hand
Must be the grip of love
Sure got it in your hand
Must be the grip of love
Sure got it in your hand
Must be the grip of love
Sure got it in your hand
Must be the grip of love

Tell me now
Where you got
Such a thing
Tell me now
Where you got
Such a thing
Tell me now
Where you got
Such a thing
Must be the grip
Must be the grip of love
Must be the grip
Must be the gri
p of love
Must be the grip
Must be the grip of love
Must be the grip
Must be the grip of love
Must be the grip
Must be the grip of love

Love & kisses to y’all,
